Next, I sprayed the can with a clear coat of matte lacquer and threw sand onto the lacquer before it had a chance to dry. Once again, I repeated the process. Finally, I sprayed a final coat of clear matte lacquer for the finishing touch.

Today, the watering can looks pretty close to how I originally painted it―and it’s been outside in approximately the same spot for about four years now with plants growing in it. This may seem unimportant and insignificant to some, but it is a rewarding experience to the person who took the time to add that special, personal touch to a manufactured garden accent. Craftsman 12 Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 09-17438 Review

I bought the Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool two months ago to test out and review.

Nextec Multi-Tool

I used the circular saw blade to trim a 1 X 6 out in the yard. I used the flush blade to cut the bottom of a door jamb so I could install tile in the bathroom. I used the carbide blade to clean out the grout so I could replace a 6 X 6 tile that I put in wrong. I used the scraper blade to remove some double sided tape so I could put in a new door weather seal. I used the sanding pad to sand a leg on an adirondack chair before I painted it. I used the rasp to change the angle on a chair leg brace.

I did all this without dragging out a cord, a sander, an angle grinder, a wood file, a putty knife, a circular saw or a hammer and chisel. I did all of these tasks easily and in a lot less time than it would normally take. I did all these tasks with just one tool!

There are a lot of similar multi-tools on the market. The Craftsman Multi-Tool is not the first and it is not the best, but it is the best value at only $99. And it’s cordless! It is similar to the Bosch PS-50, Fein Multimaster, and Dremel Multi-Max. The Craftsman multi-tool is like the others and is even compatible with the Fein accessories but it’s a lithium-ion cordless multi-tool for only $99 (The Dremel Multi-Max is corded for $99). And as a bonus, like the Fein Multimaster, it comes with an integrated dust bypass vacuum adapter so you can hook it up to your shop vac or dust collection system.

I don’t consider the Craftsman Multi-tool as a heavy-duty tool. In fact the tool will get hot around the battery area if you use it on too large a task (3 to 4 batteries in a row.) It is just a great tool for those special small to medium jobs around the house that I have all the time. It is a great “around the house” tool. If you need a tool like this to work for you all day long or have a large project like scraping an entire house before painting you really should buy a heavier tool like the Fein Multi-Master.

Cottage gardens associated with the English countryside are known for their colorful, informal, relaxed landscape and surroundings.

Today many cottage style collectors are after a more folksy look and hunt for garden collectibles and accessories which are charming, practical and perhaps a bit quirky. Found objects which are rusty, flaky, crackled, worn, chipped and weathered are preferred over newer manufactured items.

Once you start playing with ideas, it is actually quite easy to find a great deal of objects which can be used as planters, flower boxes and outdoor decorative items. For example, old kettles, wood soda crates, old wash tubs, oversized ceramic bowls are all wonderful basins or containers for plants and flowers.

Because cottage style is all about re-cycling and re-purposing what you have look around your kitchen and in your storage areas for “orphaned” kitchen and house-wares which can be put to use in your sunroom, on your deck or patio. An enamelware coffee pot that has lost its top looks adorable with a hanging plant. Pyrex casseroles make sweet bases for “dish garden”.

Many homeowners aren’t aware that there is actually interest in old rusty hand tools, older terracotta pots, vintage hand tools, flaky picket fences etc. Pick neighborhoods with very old homes when you are out and about “junking” for garden tools and collectibles. My motto here is that “Thar’s Gold in Them Thar Garden Sheds” ….well maybe not gold…but a lot of groovy, aged rusty garden and outdoor treasures.

Reproduction vintage style garden accessories are plentiful. These objects are made so well.. it’s real easy to get fooled. Shop around, ask questions, get to learn which items are commonly reproduced such as sap buckets, gates, statues etc. You can learn a great deal from shops that carry both new and vintage garden accessories by asking the owner or staff to show you some differences between new and old objects. While often a lower price marked on an item that generally yields more is a clue to a seasoned shopper that what they are looking at may not be an original, this is only a starting point. The beginner generally doesn’t know what prices to expect which is why a review of the collectibles shown in this section is a helpful beginning. And you may get lucky, you may find some bargains that are priced reasonably and are in fact the real deal.

There are many different types of ergonomic garden tools. This article will cover a few of the most common ergonomic garden tools available, and will also mention a few things to look for when shopping for the tool that’s right for you.

Ergonomic Hand Garden Tools

In the smaller range of ergonomic hand tools, the most common design trait is a curved handle. I’ve seen this design also called a radial handle. Traditional hand gardening tools force you to strain the angle of your wrist downward as you grip and push the tool into the soil. Ergonomic garden tools have a curved handle that looks like a pistol grip. This allows you to keep your wrist straight and in-line with your forearm. You than can make a much stronger fist and put more weight and strength into the tool without straining the joints or tendons of your wrist.

Another innovative design uses a straight handle shaft, about 12 inches long, that straps securely to your forearm, just below your elbow, and then uses a perpendicular grip handle at the level of your hand that you can grasp. This is a great design for individuals that have some level of disability or suffer from arthritis, because you can make use of the strength of your entire arm, distributing the weight and force throughout, instead of on your wrist and hand. You will also significantly increase the force of work you can exert on the garden tool.

Comfortable and Shock-Resistant Padded Handles and Grips

Another common feature in both hand-sized tools and full length tools is padding. Padding allows you to form a tighter grip, because it is flexible, and it is much more comfortable to use and reduces the chances of blisters. Padded handles also absorb some of the shock or vibrations associated with some of the movements you make with garden tools, which helps to prevent pain and damage to your hands, wrists, and elbows.

For instance, I remember using a flat bar to pull up tile that had very strong adhesive. This is not a gardening example, but one that makes a good point.

I was hammering one end of the flat bar to get under the edges and to separate the adhesive, and using my other hand to hold the bar in place. Well, first, a larger tool would have been the much better choice, and a tool with thick, comfortable padding would have reduced much of the energy traveling into my hands and wrists. I remember feeling like I had sprained my wrist after about one hour’s work. This could, and should, have been avoided with the use of a much better ergonomic tool.

Curved and Telescoping Full Length Handles

Two common designs for full length tools are curved handles, and handles that are length-adjustable through telescoping segments. One common design looks like an “S” and it is used on snow shovels and scoop shovels. The “S” shaped handle allows you to lift and push more easily, and it significantly reduces lower back strain.

Telescoping handles allow you to adjust the length for the type of work you are doing or for the height of the user. Again, these help in reducing lower back strain and can also reduce fatigue in your arm muscles.

What to Look For

There are three things to look for when purchasing an ergonomic garden tool: strength, weight, and quality construction.

1. Strength

Both the handle and tool head should be strong. Some manufacturers use a lightweight steel shaft that is coated. Others will use a professional grade fiberglass that is both lightweight and strong. Strength and weight are key to good quality ergonomic garden tools.

2. Weight

As just mentioned, weight is an important factor. There are designs that are both durable and very strong, but also light weight. You do not want to work with a heavy tool. Repetitive movements over a period of time will bring more fatigue and increase chances of injury if you use a heavy tool.

3. Quality Construction

Buying an 89 cent, two liter bottle of off-brand soda may be a good idea, but buying inexpensive, off-brand ergonomic garden tools is usually not. Cheap metals, flimsy tool attachments, weak handles, etc., are factors you need to stay away from. Pay for high quality and life-long warranties, and you will use your tools for years.
